Trumpet Masterclass with Mike Lovatt

Widely regarded as one of the world’s most versatile and gifted trumpeters, Mike Lovatt has performed with everyone from Quincy Jones to Shirley Bassey, Michael Bublé to Tom Jones. His list of West End Show and film credits is extensive and he is currently principal trumpet in the John Wilson Orchestra.

It was therefore a great honour to have Mike visit St Edmund’s School on Friday 28th February to hold a master-class prior to his performance with the University of Kent Concert and Big Bands in the evening.

Mike’s warm and giving manner was a joy and as a result all the participants were made to feel at ease from the start of a two-hour session. St Edmund’s pupils James Pooley, Emily Kirsch-Mills and Oscar Lloyd alongside the University of Kent’s Joe Prescott and Rainham Mark Grammar School for Boys Richard Blake were put through their paces on a wide range of repertoire.

Invaluable advice was given on all aspects of technique and all the students were given clear objectives to take beyond the session. Mike himself performed some outstanding snippets from his repertoire much to the appreciation of the audience.

As always Spencer Payne must be congratulated for his ‘on the spot’ accompanying which very much enhanced all the performances.

Mike Lovatt is a much in demand performer and we are very grateful that he was able to visit us at St Edmund’s prior to him commencing yet another West End run. Such a rewarding morning and one I hope we can repeat at some point in the future.
